About the Port
Gdansk traces its roots to the 10th century, when its position on the Baltic Sea made it a vital crossroads for merchants and cultures from across Northern Europe. Though nearly leveled during World War II, the city's Old Town was painstakingly reconstructed, and today its colorful facades, ornate gables, and soaring red-brick churches recreate the splendor of its Hanseatic golden age. The shipyards here also gave rise to the Solidarity movement, which played a defining role in Poland's modern history.
The Old Town lies within easy walking distance of the pier, its cobblestone lanes lined with amber jewelry shops and craft stalls worth a leisurely browse. Beyond the city center, travelers can venture to Malbork Castle, the largest Gothic fortress in Europe, or explore the tranquil lakes and forests of Poland's Lake District.

Visit the European Solidarity Centre
This museum at the historic shipyard traces the rise of the Solidarity movement that helped topple communism across Eastern Europe. Allow at least an hour; it's a short walk or taxi ride north of the Old Town.
Climb St. Mary's Church Tower
One of the largest brick churches in the world, its tower rewards the 400-plus step climb with sweeping views over the red rooftops and Motlawa River. Arrive early to beat crowds and the midday heat inside the stairwell.
Stroll Long Market to Neptune's Fountain
This grand promenade, lined with merchant houses and the Gothic Town Hall, opens onto the bronze Neptune Fountain, a symbol of Gdansk's seafaring wealth. It's the natural spine of any walk from the pier into the Old Town.
