Gisborne

One of the first cities on Earth to greet the sunrise, Gisborne pairs Māori heritage with Poverty Bay's golden beaches and vineyards.

About the Port

Gisborne sits on New Zealand's East Coast at Poverty Bay, where the Turanganui River meets the Pacific. The area holds deep significance in Māori history as an early center of Ngāti Porou and Te Aitanga-a-Māhaki settlement, and it was here that Captain Cook made his first landing in New Zealand in 1769. Today the city is known for its laid-back pace, sandy beaches, and surrounding vineyards that produce notable Chardonnay.

Visitors find a compact downtown within easy walking distance of the waterfront, with cafés, galleries, and historic sites clustered near Kaiti Beach and the Cook landing site. The wider Tairāwhiti region offers coastal drives, wine tastings, and access to remote East Cape scenery. Its relatively isolated position gives Gisborne an unhurried character distinct from New Zealand's larger port cities.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Gisborne.

Visit Cook Landing Site & Titirangi

Walk the reserve marking Cook's first New Zealand landfall, then climb Titirangi (Kaiti Hill) for sweeping views over Poverty Bay; the lookout is a short drive or steep walk from downtown.

Taste Gisborne Chardonnay

Sample the region's renowned Chardonnay at family-run vineyards scattered through the Tairāwhiti countryside, many just a 10-15 minute drive from the waterfront with tasting rooms open to visitors.

Stroll Kaiti Beach

Walk the black-sand shoreline near the river mouth, backed by pohutukawa trees and carved meeting houses that speak to the area's deep Māori heritage, all within easy reach of downtown cafés.
