About the Port
Rising from the South Atlantic roughly 30 miles southwest of the main Tristan da Cunha island, Inaccessible Island is a small, uninhabited volcanic outcrop named for the sheer cliffs that ring its coastline. Together with nearby Gough Island, it forms a UNESCO World Heritage Site prized for its near-pristine ecosystem, home to nesting seabirds and the flightless Inaccessible Island rail, one of the smallest flightless birds in the world. Tussock grass, fern bush, and windswept slopes cover its interior, largely untouched by human settlement.
Access is intentionally limited to protect its fragile habitat, and landings are rare, permit-controlled, and highly dependent on sea conditions. Most visits are limited to close approaches by small boat, offering views of nesting colonies and dramatic cliff faces from the water. For those who do reach its shores, the island represents one of the more remote and unspoiled points in the South Atlantic.

Cruise the Cliff Coastline
Since landings are rarely granted, most visitors experience Inaccessible Island by small boat, gliding beneath towering sea cliffs and volcanic rock faces. Keep a camera ready for dramatic light on the basalt walls and crashing surf below.
Spot Nesting Seabirds
Scan the ledges and slopes for rockhopper penguins, albatrosses, and other seabirds that breed here undisturbed by predators. Binoculars sharpen the view of colonies clustered along the upper cliffs.
Watch for the Flightless Rail
On the rare chance of a permitted shore landing, look low in the tussock grass for the Inaccessible Island rail, among the world's smallest flightless birds, found nowhere else on Earth.
