About the Port
Ittoqqortoormiit sits at the mouth of Scoresby Sound, a vast, multi-branched fjord complex reaching deep into East Greenland's wilderness. Home to roughly 350 residents, the settlement's name translates to "Big-House Dwellers" in the Eastern Greenlandic dialect. Isolated and ice-bound for much of the year, it remains one of Greenland's most remote inhabited places, where hunting and fishing still anchor daily life much as they have for generations.
Visitors arriving by sea find a scattering of brightly painted houses set against dramatic mountains and drifting icebergs, with sled dogs a common sight around town. The surrounding fjord offers some of the region's richest opportunities for spotting whales, seabirds, and Greenlandic gyrfalcons against a backdrop of towering cliffs and calm, mirror-like waters.
