Izmir

An ancient Aegean crossroads whose harbor city opens onto Ephesus, Pergamon, and layers of Greek, Roman, and Ottoman history

About the Port

Set on a deep bay along Turkey's Aegean coast, Izmir traces its roots to ancient Smyrna, one of the region's oldest continuously inhabited cities. Its waterfront promenade, the Kordon, curves past cafés and gardens, while the hilltop Kadifekale fortress and the excavated Roman agora recall centuries of Greek, Roman, and Ottoman rule. The clock tower in Konak Square remains a familiar landmark near the harbor.

Beyond the city, Izmir serves as a practical gateway to some of the Mediterranean's most significant ancient sites, including Ephesus and Pergamon, both reachable on a day trip. The old town quarters and covered Kemeraltı bazaar sit within easy reach of the port area, rewarding those who prefer to explore on foot. Together, the modern city and its ancient surroundings make Izmir a layered introduction to Anatolia's long history.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Izmir.

Explore Ephesus's Ancient Ruins

Wander the marble-paved streets past the Library of Celsus and the Great Theater at one of the Mediterranean's best-preserved classical cities. Roughly an hour's drive from port, so book an early half-day excursion to beat both crowds and heat.

Browse Kemeraltı Bazaar

Lose an hour or two in this sprawling covered market of spice stalls, antique shops, and tea gardens dating back to Ottoman times. It's a short walk from the harbor, making it easy to fit in before or after other stops.

Climb to Pergamon's Acropolis

For those with a full day ashore, the hilltop ruins north of Izmir include a dramatic steep-raked theater and the remains of a famed ancient library. Reaching the site takes about two hours each way, so plan this as a dedicated excursion.
