Jerusalem (Haifa)

Haifa's harbor opens the gateway to Jerusalem's ancient stones and Mount Carmel's terraced gardens alike

About the Port

Set beneath the slopes of Mount Carmel, Haifa is Israel's principal northern port and the traditional gateway for travelers bound for Jerusalem, roughly ninety minutes inland. The city itself rewards a closer look, with the golden-domed Shrine of the Bab rising above the terraced Baha'i Gardens that cascade down the mountainside toward the harbor, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most photographed views in the country.

Beyond Haifa's seaside promenades and busy urban core, the port serves as the practical starting point for day trips to Jerusalem's Old City, with its layered history spanning three major faiths, as well as to Nazareth and other sites across the Galilee. Because the drive to Jerusalem is lengthy, early departures are common, making this a call best suited to travelers eager to see the ancient city firsthand rather than linger in Haifa itself.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Jerusalem .

Walk the Old City of Jerusalem

Wander the Via Dolorosa, the Western Wall, and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre within the ancient walled city, about ninety minutes from the pier. Given the drive time, an early, organized full-day excursion is the only realistic way to see it properly.

View the Baha'i Gardens from the Louis Promenade

Take in the postcard panorama of the terraced gardens and golden shrine dome from the upper Carmel viewpoint, a short taxi or bus ride from the port and free to visit.

Explore Nazareth's Old Town

Visit the Basilica of the Annunciation and the market lanes of Christianity's traditional childhood home of Jesus, often paired with Galilee itineraries as an alternative to the longer Jerusalem run.
