Cruise Port Guide

Johnstone Strait / Southern British Columbia

A wilderness passage of narrow tidal waters and Indigenous coastal culture on Canada's rugged northern coast

All Cruise Ports

About the Port

Johnstone Strait separates Vancouver Island from the British Columbia mainland, its narrow, current-swept waters long known as a summer gathering place for orca pods that follow salmon runs through the channel. Forested slopes rise steeply on either side, giving the strait a hushed, remote character even as ferries and fishing vessels pass through.

At its edge sits Alert Bay, a small community on Cormorant Island that is home to the 'Namgis First Nation. The village's waterfront is compact and walkable from the dock, centered on the U'mista Cultural Centre, which preserves potlatch regalia and Kwakwaka'wakw heritage, and on a row of carved totem poles nearby. Together the strait and the bay offer a quiet counterpoint to city ports, pairing wildlife-rich waters with a firsthand look at living Northwest Coast Indigenous culture.
