About the Port
Kahului serves as the principal harbor for Maui, set on the island's north-central shore where sugarcane plains once stretched toward the West Maui Mountains and Haleakala's volcanic slopes. The town itself is modest and commercial, but its harbor places travelers within easy reach of Maui's signature landscapes, from the lush, waterfall-lined Iao Valley to the winding coastal route toward Hana. Haleakala National Park, with its high-altitude crater views, rises inland and remains one of the island's most visited natural sites.
Beyond the harbor, Maui's beaches, historic Lahaina waterfront, and upcountry ranch lands offer a range of day excursions suited to different paces. Because Kahului is a deep-water port rather than a tender landing, disembarkation is straightforward, though many of the island's best-known attractions lie a fair drive away, making organized transportation or a rental car the practical choice for exploring further afield.
