About the Port
Kemi sits at the mouth of the Kemi River on the Gulf of Bothnia, in Finnish Lapland near the Arctic Circle. Long tied to the timber and pulp industry, the town has grown into a modest gateway for travelers heading toward Rovaniemi and the wider Lapland region, with its pine forests, rivers, and wide northern skies. The pier area is compact and walkable, making it easy to explore the small harbor front before venturing farther inland.
The town is known for its seasonal snow and ice structures, built anew each year along the waterfront, and for the icebreaker vessels once used to keep Baltic shipping lanes open through winter, some of which remain on view near the harbor. Kemi's understated character and northern setting offer a calm counterpoint to more heavily touristed Nordic ports.
