About the Port
Off the southern coast of Tanzania, Kilwa Kisiwani preserves the remains of one of medieval East Africa's most powerful trading settlements. From the 13th to the 16th centuries, the island controlled a lucrative gold trade that connected the African interior with markets across the Indian Ocean, drawing merchants dealing in silver, pearls, perfumes, and textiles. Its wealth is still visible in scattered ruins across the island, including palace complexes, bathing pools, and fortified structures, all recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Among the ruins stands the Great Mosque, believed to be the oldest standing mosque on the East African coast, its roofline once supported by sixteen domed and vaulted bays. Reaching the ruins typically involves a short boat crossing from the mainland, followed by a walk across the island on uneven ground, so sturdy footwear serves visitors well. The site offers a quiet, evocative window into a coastal trading world that once rivaled ports much better known today.
