About the Port
Little Bay serves as the low-key gateway to Montserrat, an island reshaped by the ongoing eruptions of Soufrière Hills Volcano. The abandoned capital, Plymouth, lies entombed in ash to the south, its rooftops and church steeples still visible above the hardened flow, earning the island its nickname as the Pompeii of the Caribbean. Volcano observation points offer sweeping views over the exclusion zone, while the surrounding hills remain green and largely untouched.
Away from the volcanic terrain, the island reveals a quieter side: black-sand beaches, rainforest trails, and a close-knit community proud of its Irish and West African heritage. Music lovers may recognize Montserrat as the former home of Air Studios, where several notable rock albums were recorded in the 1970s and 80s. The pier area is compact, so onward excursions are the best way to see the island’s dramatic contrasts firsthand.
