About the Port
Lombok rises east of Bali across the Lombok Strait, its skyline dominated by the volcanic massif of Rinjani and its coastline traced by quiet bays and beaches. Inland, terraced rice fields and green hills give way to villages where Sasak traditions, from thatched-roof homes to handwoven textiles, remain part of daily life. The island's slower pace and lighter development set it apart from its more famous neighbor.
Lembar, on Lombok's southwestern coast, serves as the island's main port and gateway for exploring beyond the shoreline. From there, travelers reach traditional craft villages, coastal viewpoints, and the town of Mataram, the island's administrative center. Longer excursions can extend toward the slopes of Rinjani or the beaches along the southern coast, making Lembar a practical starting point for a day spent between mountain scenery and village life.
Pavlus Recommendations
How our planners would spend a day in Lombok .
Watch Ikat Weaving in Sukarara
This Sasak village northeast of Lembar is known for handloom ikat and songket textiles, woven by women on traditional looms passed through generations. Roughly a 45-minute drive, it's an easy way to see island crafts up close.
Tour Mayura Water Palace
Set in Mataram about 30-40 minutes from the port, this 18th-century royal complex features a lotus pond and pavilion once used for religious ceremonies. It's a compact, worthwhile stop en route to or from other inland sights.
Reach the Southern Beaches
Kuta Lombok and nearby coves lie roughly an hour south of Lembar, offering dramatic hills meeting turquoise water far quieter than Bali's shoreline. Arrange a car or driver in advance, since the drive takes a meaningful bite out of the day.
