About the Port
Lundy Island rises from the Bristol Channel as a three-mile sliver of granite cliffs and open moorland, its name rooted in the Old Norse word for puffin. The island's isolation has long made it a haven for wildlife, with puffins, guillemots, and razorbills nesting on its ledges each spring and gray seals hauling out along sheltered coves. Feral goats, Soay sheep, and Sika deer roam freely, while the surrounding waters, among the first protected marine zones in England, shelter diverse reef life.
Visitors arrive by tender, since Lundy has no deep-water harbor, and step ashore near a small landing beach beneath the island's lighthouse and the ruined walls of Marisco Castle. Walking paths lace the high ground, leading past a modest church and scattered stone cottages that hint at centuries of quiet habitation. The absence of cars and crowds gives the island an unhurried, elemental character rare along this stretch of coast.

The decommissioned 19th-century lighthouse crowns the island's highest point, a steady 30-40 minute walk from the landing, with sweeping views over the Bristol Channel on clear days. Its tower can be climbed for a still-wider outlook.
Explore Marisco Castle Ruins
Just above the landing beach, these 13th-century fortress walls once guarded against pirates and rival claimants to the island. A quick stop worth pairing with the nearby church and cottages before heading inland.
