About the Port
Nachvak Fiord cuts deep into the northern reaches of the Torngat Mountains, one of the most remote and dramatic landscapes on Canada's eastern seaboard. Towering granite peaks, some among the oldest exposed rock on the continent, rise directly from cold, clear water, while glacially carved slopes descend to narrow beaches used seasonally by Inuit for generations. The fjord lies within Torngat Mountains National Park, a wilderness reserved for wildlife and traditional Inuit land use rather than settlement.
Access is by ship only, with landings made by small boat onto rocky or gravel shorelines, and Inuit guides or bear monitors typically accompany visitors ashore given the presence of polar bears and caribou. There are no facilities, roads, or communities nearby, so visits emphasize open-air walks, wildlife viewing, and quiet appreciation of an ancient northern landscape rarely seen firsthand.
