About the Port
Nain is the administrative capital of Nunatsiavut, the self-governing Inuit region of northern Labrador, and home to roughly 1,200 residents. The town sits amid a dramatic landscape of fjords and tundra along the Labrador Sea, remote enough that it remains accessible mainly by air or sea. At its center, the Illusuak Cultural Centre presents Labrador Inuit heritage through exhibits, artwork, and community programs, offering visitors context for a way of life shaped by centuries of adaptation to the Arctic environment.
Beyond the cultural centre, Nain's small harbor and modest downtown are easily explored on foot, with local carvers and artisans often selling soapstone and other traditional crafts. The surrounding terrain, backed by the Torngat Mountains further north, hints at one of the most rugged and least-traveled corners of eastern Canada. Nain rewards travelers seeking authenticity over polish, and a genuine encounter with a living Inuit community.
