North Seymour

A flat, arid island in the Galápagos where frigatebirds, land iguanas, and blue-footed boobies nest in plain sight

About the Port

North Seymour is a small, low-lying island north of Baltra in the Galápagos archipelago, formed by uplifted seabed rather than volcanic activity. Its dry vegetation and open landscape make it one of the easiest places in the islands to observe wildlife at close range, including nesting colonies of frigatebirds, whose males inflate distinctive red throat pouches during courtship, along with blue-footed boobies and land iguanas. A network of trails allows visitors to walk among the colonies without disturbing them.

Nearby waters shelter sea lions, rays, and reef sharks, drawing snorkelers into calm, clear coves rich with marine life. The island is reached by dinghy landing, with no docks or facilities on shore, keeping the setting undeveloped and quiet. As a protected part of the Galápagos National Park, access is limited to guided visits, preserving North Seymour as one of the archipelago's most rewarding stops for encountering endemic species in their natural habitat.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in North Seymour.

Walk the Frigatebird Colony Trail

A short, level loop trail winds through nesting frigatebirds and blue-footed boobies close enough to observe courtship displays and chicks. Guides keep groups on marked paths, so early landing slots offer the best light and fewer crowds.

Spot Land Iguanas in the Scrub

The island's dry palo santo forest and open terrain shelter a healthy population of land iguanas, often seen basking along the trail edges. Their pale yellow-brown coloring blends with the arid landscape, so a slow pace helps spot them.

Snorkel with Sea Lions and Rays

Calm coves off the rocky shoreline hold curious sea lions, rays, and reef sharks in clear, shallow water. Snorkeling gear is typically brought ashore by dinghy since there is no dock, so plan for a short swim from the panga.
