About the Port

Nosy Be lies just off Madagascar's northwestern shore, its name meaning "big island" in Malagasy. Volcanic in origin, the landscape is dotted with crater lakes and rolling hills planted with ylang-ylang, vanilla, and cacao, crops that have long perfumed the island's economy. The main settlement, Hell-Ville, offers a low-key waterfront with colonial-era buildings and a market atmosphere, giving arriving travelers an easy first taste of Malagasy life within walking distance of the pier.

Inland, the Lokobe Reserve protects a remnant of humid forest sheltering lemurs, chameleons, and other endemic wildlife, while boat excursions reach nearby islets such as Nosy Komba, known for its free-ranging lemurs, and Nosy Tanikely, prized for clear water and coral reefs. Beaches along Nosy Be's coast range from lively to secluded, and the surrounding seas draw snorkelers and divers alike. The island serves as an approachable gateway to Madagascar's distinct biodiversity and slower island rhythm.
