About the Port
Oban is the sole town on Stewart Island, New Zealand's third-largest island and the southernmost stop on many South Pacific itineraries. Set on a sheltered inlet called Halfmoon Bay, it serves as the entry point to Rakiura National Park, which covers most of the island in dense native bush and encircling coastline. The town itself is small and unhurried, with a handful of shops, a pub, and walking tracks that begin practically at the waterfront.
Visitors come mainly for the island's wildlife and wild scenery, including native birdlife found in few other places, notably the kiwi, which is more easily spotted here than almost anywhere else in the country. Given its remote position and limited infrastructure, ships typically anchor offshore with tender access into the bay. The pace is quiet and the landscape untouched, offering a genuine sense of New Zealand's far southern edge.
