Pine Island

A jewel of the South Pacific lagoon, where powder-white sand meets water in impossible shades of blue beneath native pines

About the Port

Pine Island, known locally as Île des Pins, lies at the southern tip of New Caledonia and takes its name from the tall native araucaria pines that rise along its shoreline. The island sits within a lagoon recognized for its exceptional coral reef system, and its calm bays are framed by limestone cliffs and fine coral sand. Traditional outrigger canoes, still used by local Kanak communities, are a familiar sight gliding across the shallow, glass-clear water.

Beyond its beaches, the island's interior holds quiet coconut groves and small villages where life moves at an unhurried pace. Ships typically anchor offshore, with tenders carrying travelers to shore, so a bit of flexibility around timing is worth building into the day. Snorkeling, swimming, and simply admiring the color of the lagoon remain the island's central pleasures, best enjoyed at an easy, island pace.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Pine Island.

Swim the Natural Pool

The Piscine Naturelle at Oro Bay is a shallow, reef-sheltered pool perfect for snorkeling among small fish and coral. It's a short walk from the tender landing through a footpath lined with pines.

Glide by Outrigger Canoe

Join a traditional pirogue trip across Kanumera or Kuto Bay for a close look at the lagoon's turquoise shallows and limestone islets. Local paddlers often include a stop at a small sandbar islet.

Visit Queen Hortense Cave

This limestone grotto near Vao holds stalactites and a small freshwater pool once used as a hideout by a Kanak queen. Reaching it involves a short, sometimes slippery walk, so sturdy shoes help.
