Puerto Egas

Volcanic tide pools, fur seal grottoes, and dark sand beaches make Puerto Egas a quiet showcase of Santiago Island's wilder side

All Cruise Ports

About the Port

Puerto Egas sits on the western shore of Santiago Island in the Galápagos, reached by a wet landing onto a dark volcanic sand beach. Eroded lava formations along the coastline have created tide pools and grottoes where fur seals and marine iguanas gather, while shorebirds and Galápagos hawks are frequently spotted overhead. Nearby Buccaneer Cove, once used by pirates and whalers for shelter and provisions, adds a layer of maritime history to the dramatic cliff scenery.

Walking trails lead across black lava rock to explore tide pools and observe wildlife up close, with minimal elevation change making the terrain accessible to most visitors. The surrounding waters offer opportunities for snorkeling alongside sea lions and tropical fish. As with most Galápagos landings, access is limited to small groups accompanied by licensed naturalist guides, preserving the site's untouched character.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Puerto Egas.

Explore the Fur Seal Grottoes

Follow the lava-rock trail to shaded tide pools and grottoes where Galápagos fur seals rest in the rocky shade, a rare species to see this close. Wear sturdy shoes for the uneven volcanic terrain; the walk takes about an hour round trip.

Snorkel Off the Black Beach

Slip into the water directly from the volcanic sand beach to swim alongside playful sea lions, tropical reef fish, and the occasional ray. Bring gear ashore during the wet landing, since guides typically allot time here right after arrival.

Cruise Buccaneer Cove by Panga

Ride a small skiff along the dramatic cliffs once used by pirates and whalers, scanning red-tinged rock formations for nesting frigatebirds, boobies, and pelicans overhead. It's a scenic, low-effort way to round out the visit before or after the shore landing.
