Qaqortoq, Greenland

Colorful Norse-Inuit heritage and open-air stone sculpture meet at the edge of Greenland's ice cap

About the Port

Qaqortoq is the largest town in southern Greenland, its colorful wooden houses rising above a harbor framed by fjords and drifting icebergs. At the heart of the settlement, a stone-built fountain—said to be the country's oldest—anchors a square lined with historic buildings, including a stone church dating to 1832. Nearby, the open-air "Stone and Man" exhibition turns boulders and rock faces around the town into a gallery of sculpture by Greenlandic artists.

The compact colonial center is easily explored on foot from the pier, making it simple to wander between the square, the church, and the sculpture trail in a short visit. Beyond town, the Norse ruins of Hvalsey Church stand as one of the region's most evocative reminders of Viking settlement. Together, the layers of Inuit tradition, Norse history, and dramatic subarctic scenery give Qaqortoq a character distinct from anywhere else in South Greenland.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Qaqortoq.

Visit Hvalsey Church Ruins

This best-preserved Norse ruin in Greenland marks the site of the last documented Viking settlement gathering before the colony vanished. Reaching it typically requires a boat excursion across the fjord, so book ahead if offered.

Follow the Stone and Man Trail

Track down sculptures carved directly into boulders and cliff faces scattered through and around town, a project by Greenlandic and Nordic artists. A self-guided walk of an hour or so covers the main pieces near the harbor.

Linger at Mindebrønde Square

Greenland's oldest fountain anchors this square ringed by candy-colored wooden houses and the 1832 stone church. It's the natural starting point for exploring the compact center on foot from the pier.
