About the Port
Rangiroa is a coral atoll in the Tuamotu Archipelago, its ring of low islets enclosing one of the largest lagoons in the world, wide enough that the far shore disappears over the horizon. The atoll's passes, where lagoon and ocean waters exchange with the tides, draw divers and snorkelers to currents rich with reef sharks, rays, dolphins, and dense schools of tropical fish. Coconut palms and small settlements line the narrow strips of land between lagoon and open sea.
Beyond the water, the atoll offers a quiet, low-key charm, with black pearl farms, vanilla plantations, and a small local winery among its modest attractions. Motorized outrigger canoes and small boats provide the easiest way to reach prime snorkeling spots and remote motu, since the settled areas near the pier are compact and easily explored on foot. Rangiroa rewards those drawn to open water and a slower pace over dense sightseeing.
