Seward, Alaska

A small harbor town framed by glaciers and peaks, serving as the gateway to Kenai Fjords National Park

All Cruise Ports

About the Port

Seward sits along Resurrection Bay at the edge of the Kenai Peninsula, where the Kenai Mountains meet the sea and Mount Marathon rises directly above town. Founded in the early twentieth century as a railway terminus, it remains one of Alaska's oldest communities and today serves as the principal gateway to Kenai Fjords National Park, with tidewater glaciers, whales, and seabird colonies within easy reach by boat. The compact downtown, with its small museums, harbor, and working waterfront, is walkable directly from the pier.

From Seward, the road north toward Anchorage passes through forested valleys and mountain corridors favored by moose and other wildlife. Along the way, the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center offers a close look at bears, bison, and other native species in expansive natural habitats. The town's setting between mountain and fjord makes it a natural starting point for exploring Alaska's interior and coastal wilderness alike.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Seward.

Cruise Kenai Fjords National Park

Board a wildlife and glacier tour boat right from Seward's harbor to reach tidewater glaciers, breaching whales, and seabird colonies; excursions typically run several hours, so book ahead to secure a spot.

Hike or Ride to Exit Glacier

Alaska's only road-accessible glacier lies a short drive from downtown, with an easy nature trail leading to its face for an up-close look at receding ice.

Visit the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center

On the route toward Anchorage, this expansive sanctuary shelters rescued bears, moose, and bison in natural habitats, offering a rare close view of native species without a backcountry trek.
