Shingu, Japan

Gateway to the ancient Kumano pilgrimage, where sacred shrines rise from forested mountains toward the Pacific coast

About the Port

Shingu sits along the Kii Peninsula's southeastern coast, a small city long revered as one of the spiritual centers of the Kumano region. For over a thousand years, pilgrims have traveled these mountains to worship at three sacred shrines, and Shingu is home to two of them. Hayatama Shrine, set near the mouth of the Kumano River, and Kamikura Shrine, reached by a steep stone stairway on Mount Kamikura, both form part of the UNESCO-listed Sacred Sites of the Kii Mountain Range.

Beyond the shrines, the surrounding countryside offers dense forests, river valleys, and glimpses of the pilgrimage trails that link Shingu to other sacred sites across the peninsula. The historic shrine precincts lie within a short distance of the port, making it possible to explore this centuries-old pilgrimage tradition without extensive travel inland.

How our planners would spend a day in Shingu.

Climb to Kamikura Shrine

Ascend the 538 steep, uneven stone steps up Mount Kamikura to the sacred rock outcrop shrine; the climb takes about 20-30 minutes and rewards with sweeping views over Shingu and the coast.

Visit Hayatama Shrine

Walk the grounds of this vermilion shrine near the Kumano River's mouth, one of the region's three grand shrines and a cornerstone of the Kumano pilgrimage tradition for over a millennium.

Trace the Kumano Kodo

Sample a short stretch of the ancient pilgrimage trails threading through cedar forest just outside town, offering a quiet glimpse of the route that once linked sacred sites across the peninsula.
