About the Port
The Strait of Magellan winds through the southern tip of South America, connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans across roughly 350 miles of channels, fjords, and narrow passages. Named for Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan, who navigated it in 1520, the strait served for centuries as the principal maritime link between the world's two largest oceans before the Panama Canal opened a shorter route. Sir Francis Drake and other early navigators also charted these waters, and their voyages remain part of the region's maritime lore.
Cruising this passage offers a firsthand look at the rugged terrain of Tierra del Fuego and Patagonia, where glaciers descend toward the water and weather can shift quickly. No ports of call interrupt the transit, so travelers experience it entirely from the ship, watching a landscape that has changed little since the age of exploration.
Pavlus Recommendations
How our planners would spend a day in Strait of Magellan.
Watch from an Open Deck
Bundle up and head outside as the ship threads narrow channels between Tierra del Fuego and mainland Patagonia; glaciers, jagged peaks, and shifting weather make every hour different. Arrive early for a rail-side spot since prime viewing areas fill up fast.
Track the Ship's Course
Follow onboard navigational maps or bridge announcements to see exactly where Magellan and Drake once sailed, matching real-time position to the strait's historic landmarks and narrowest passages.
Join Onboard Lectures
Attend talks on the strait's exploration history and Patagonian ecology while at sea; naturalists often point out seabirds, dolphins, or distant glaciers as the ship passes.
