Tagus Cove

Volcanic cliffs, a saltwater crater lake, and centuries of ship graffiti mark this remote anchorage on Isabela Island

All Cruise Ports

About the Port

Tucked along the western shore of Isabela Island in the Galápagos archipelago, Tagus Cove is a sheltered natural harbor framed by dark volcanic tuff cliffs. Sailors and whalers once anchored here for generations, leaving painted names and dates on the rock face that still mark the cove's long maritime history. Inland, a short trail climbs to Darwin Lake, a saltwater crater lake set within an extinct volcanic cone, offering wide views over the surrounding lava landscape and the sea beyond.

The cove's calm, clear waters make it a favored spot for snorkeling and small-boat exploration, with sightings of penguins, flightless cormorants, and marine iguanas common along the shoreline. There is no dock at Tagus Cove, so landings are made by panga, and the isolated, unspoiled setting reflects the untouched character found across much of Isabela Island. It remains one of the more evocative stops for those tracing the islands' volcanic origins and seafaring past.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Tagus Cove.

Hike to Darwin Lake

A steep but short trail, roughly 30-40 minutes round trip, climbs volcanic tuff to a crater lake overlook with sweeping views of lava fields and the sea. Sturdy shoes help on the loose, rocky path.

Snorkel the Cove

Calm, clear waters shelter Galápagos penguins, flightless cormorants, and sea turtles just offshore. Panga drop-offs make this an easy, low-effort way to spot marine life up close.

Cruise the Shoreline by Panga

Since there's no dock, small boats skim past the cliffs where sailors once carved names and dates, offering a close look at nesting seabirds and volcanic rock formations without setting foot ashore.
