About the Port
Toba sits on the Ise Peninsula in Mie Prefecture, where a sheltered bay once made it a natural harbor for fishing communities and, in the early twentieth century, the birthplace of the cultured pearl industry. Mikimoto Pearl Island, within easy reach of the waterfront, traces that history and still features demonstrations by ama, the traditional women divers who harvested oysters by hand for generations.
Beyond the harbor, Toba serves as a convenient gateway to Ise Grand Shrine, one of Shinto's most revered sites, and to the wooded coastline and small islands of Ise-Shima National Park. The town's compact core, with its seafood markets and modest inns, remains walkable from the port, making it easy to sample fresh local catch before venturing further into the region's shrines and coastal scenery.

Visit Ise Grand Shrine
Shinto's holiest shrine complex lies about 30 minutes from Toba by train or car, its ancient cedar groves and simple wooden halls rebuilt every 20 years in a centuries-old ritual. Allow at least half a day to see both the Inner and Outer Shrines.
Explore Toba Aquarium
A short walk from the pier, this large aquarium showcases dugongs, sea otters, and thousands of marine species native to Ise-Shima's waters. Plan on an hour or two to see the highlights.
