About the Port
Fushiki, the working port that serves Toyama, sits on Toyama Bay beneath the Tateyama mountain range, one of the few places in Japan where snow-capped peaks rise almost directly from the coastline. The port itself is compact and industrial, but it functions as a gateway to a region prized for its scenery, from the alpine terrain inland to the folded coastal plain along the bay.
From the pier, travelers commonly head toward Takaoka, a short distance away, known for its bronze casting tradition and a large seated Buddha figure, or further into the mountains toward the thatched-roof farmhouse villages of the Gokayama district.
