Transit Seymour Narrow

A narrow, current-swept channel in coastal British Columbia offers a dramatic natural passage along the Inside Passage route.

About the Port

Seymour Narrows is a slender stretch of water between Vancouver Island and the British Columbia mainland, framed by dense evergreen forest and steep, rocky shoreline. It is known for some of the strongest tidal currents on the coast, which can reach speeds of up to fifteen knots as the tide shifts through the narrow passage. Ships time their transit to coincide with slack water, the brief interval when the current calms enough for safe passage, making the crossing a well-timed and closely watched moment along the Inside Passage.

The surrounding waters and forested banks are largely undeveloped, offering a quiet contrast to the busier ports along the route. Wildlife sightings, including seabirds and marine mammals, are common as vessels move slowly through the channel. There is no shore excursion here, as the passage itself is the destination, best appreciated from the open deck as the landscape narrows and the current's power becomes visible firsthand.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Transit Seymour Narrow.

Watch from Open Deck

Head outside as the ship threads the narrows to see the forested shoreline close in and the current visibly churn against the hull—no balcony view compares to the open-air perspective.

Scan for Marine Wildlife

Keep binoculars ready for harbor seals, porpoises, and seabirds that favor this nutrient-rich channel; the slow, careful transit gives extra time to spot them along the rocky banks.

Note the Slack-Water Timing

Ask crew about the tide tables that dictate this crossing—understanding why ships wait for that brief calm window adds context to one of the coast's most navigationally demanding passages.
