Cruise Port Guide

Urvina Bay

A geologic marvel on Isabela Island where a sudden seafloor uplift left ancient coral reef stranded above the tide line

All Cruise Ports

About the Port

Urvina Bay sits on the western coast of Isabela Island in the Galápagos archipelago, a site made famous by a dramatic uplift in 1954 that pushed a stretch of seabed several feet above sea level in a single event. The result is an unusual landscape where visitors can walk among fossilized coral formations and marine sediment now resting far from the water's edge, offering a rare glimpse of the volcanic forces that continue to shape the islands.

The surrounding terrain supports a mix of wildlife typical of Isabela, including giant tortoises, land iguanas, and marine iguanas that bask along the shoreline. Access is by panga landing rather than a pier, so arrivals typically involve a wet landing directly onto the beach. The site rewards travelers interested in geology and endemic species alike, set against the backdrop of Alcedo Volcano rising inland.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Urvina Bay.

Walk the Uplifted Reef

Follow the trail across fossilized coral heads and shells stranded by the 1954 uplift, a rare chance to touch ancient seabed now high and dry. The walk takes about 1.5 to 2 hours over uneven ground, so wear sturdy shoes.

Spot Giant Tortoises and Iguanas

Isabela's dry forest here shelters some of the largest land iguanas in the Galápagos alongside wild giant tortoises, both easiest to see in the morning before the heat sets in. Move slowly and keep a respectful distance for the best sightings.

Master the Wet Landing

Arrival is by panga directly onto the beach rather than a dock, so pack light, wear quick-dry shoes, and stash cameras in a dry bag. Crew will time the approach with the surf, but expect to step into shallow water.
