About the Port
Venice rises from its lagoon in a shimmer of domes, bell towers, and water traffic, its entire historic center and surrounding waters recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Piazza San Marco anchors the city, framed by the Byzantine domes of the basilica, the Gothic tracery of the Doge's Palace, and the famous Bridge of Sighs arcing overhead. Beyond the marquee sights, quiet residential quarters, narrow calli, and neighborhood campi reveal daily life largely unchanged for centuries.
The historic center is compact and best explored on foot, with vaporetto water buses linking the main islands and the outlying lagoon communities of Murano, Burano, and Torcello. Opera houses, Renaissance churches, and centuries-old bridges give the city a layered cultural depth, while nearby Veneto towns such as Vicenza and Padua, both UNESCO sites in their own right, make rewarding half-day excursions.
