About the Port
Farthest from the Croatian mainland of the country's inhabited islands, Vis spent decades as a restricted military base, closed to outside visitors until 1989. That isolation left it largely undeveloped, and the island today feels notably quieter than its more famous neighbors, with a rocky coastline, clear water, and a slower pace of life. Its two main towns, Vis Town and Komiža, retain architecture shaped by centuries of Venetian influence, including narrow stone lanes and waterfront houses built directly at the water's edge.
Komiža, once a fishing stronghold developed under Venetian rule, anchors the western side of the island and remains within easy walking distance of where boats put in. The island's scenery, including hidden coves and dramatic cliffs, drew filmmakers for scenes in a well-known movie sequel, though its appeal predates any screen credit. Travelers come mainly for the unhurried atmosphere and coastal views rather than any single landmark.
Pavlus Recommendations
How our planners would spend a day in Vis Island.
Boat to the Blue Cave
A short crossing from Komiža reaches Biševo island, where sunlight through an underwater opening turns the cave's interior a glowing blue. Small boats run the roughly 20-minute trip; book ahead as morning departures fill quickly.
See Stiniva Cove
This narrow, cliff-ringed pebble beach opens to the sea through a slot barely wide enough for a boat, making it one of the Adriatic's most dramatic swimming spots. Reach it by water taxi or a steep hike down from the road above.
Taste Vugava Wine
Vis produces its own native white, Vugava, along with robust reds, grown on terraced hillsides that have supplied local tables for centuries. Small cellars near Vis Town and Komiža offer tastings worth an unhurried stop.
