West Point Island

A remote tussac-grass island where black-browed albatrosses and rockhopper penguins nest side by side above wild sandstone cliffs

About the Port

West Point Island sits at the northwest tip of the Falkland Islands, a rugged outpost once known as Albatross Island for the colonies that nest along its cliffs. A walking path crosses open farmland and tussac grass to a promontory called The Devil's Nose, where sandstone bluffs drop toward the sea and black-browed albatrosses share the slopes with rockhopper penguins. The setting is wild and largely untouched, shaped by wind and salt air rather than settlement.

Visits typically arrive by small boat landing, as the island has no proper harbor or pier, so a short walk over uneven terrain leads to the main colony viewing area. The island remains privately run as a sheep farm, and its owners have long welcomed visitors to observe the birdlife responsibly. The reward is an intimate, close-up encounter with two of the Southern Ocean's most striking seabird species in a setting of dramatic natural scenery.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in West Point Island.

Hike to The Devil's Nose

Follow the farmland track through tussac grass to the cliff-edge promontory, roughly a 30-45 minute walk each way over uneven ground; sturdy shoes are essential.

View the Mixed Seabird Colony

Watch black-browed albatrosses and rockhopper penguins nesting side by side on the sandstone slopes, a rare chance to see both species sharing the same ground at close range.

Stop at the Farm Settlement

The island's small sheep farm often welcomes visitors for tea and homemade cakes, a low-key window into the isolated life of the Falklands' outer islands.
