ITINERARY

Day: 1
Fly from Cusco to Iquitos and into the Peruvian countryside. In Nauta, a remote village set on the banks of the Marañón River, your river guide welcomes you aboard Pure Amazon, an A&K Sanctuary. Once settled on the intimate riverboat, meet the expert naturalists who accompany your expedition, followed by an excellent dinner on board.

Day: 2
There are more than 400 species of bird in the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve, from scarlet macaws to swallow-tailed hummingbirds. Spot some of the region’s most colorful and curious winged creatures on a guided birding excursion, with an expert answering all your questions along the way. Broaden your knowledge of the area with a midday lecture, then board a skiff for a guided night safari that may reveal the glowing yellow eyes of dozens of caimans and other nocturnal river dwellers.

Day: 3
A visit to a local village community lifts the lid on life in the Amazon Basin when you meet ribereños, or river people, and learn about their culture. Piranha teeth are often used in local crafts, and you have the chance to fish for these omnivores from a skiff, catching and carefully releasing one of the most notorious fish in the world.

Day: 4
After a final breakfast onboard Pure Amazon, disembark in Nauta. Gain insight into the daily life in the region with a visit to the local market, where a vibrant array of exotic fruits and vegetables is on offer. Continue with a visit to the Museum of Indigenous Amazonian Cultures to explore its rich exhibits of the traditions and histories of Amazonian communities. Explore the local handicraft market, featuring handmade jewelry, textiles and wooden crafts that can be taken home as mementos of the journey. Afterwards, fly to Lima, where you enjoy the use of a dayroom until you are transferred to the terminal for your departing flight.
