Antarctica Cruise Lines, Compared

Seventeen cruise lines sell Antarctica, and they are not alike. Some land you ashore twice a day from a 100-guest ship; others cruise past the ice on a ship of 2,000. Here is how they differ, and who each one suits.

How to Choose

Four questions that narrow the field fast

1. Do you want to land, or just to see it?

Only expedition ships put you ashore. Under the guidelines of IAATO, the association that self-regulates Antarctic tourism, ships carrying more than 500 passengers may not land anyone, and no more than 100 people may be ashore at one site at a time. If standing among the penguins is the point, choose an expedition line. If seeing the ice from a comfortable big ship is enough, a scenic voyage costs far less.

2. How many guests share the landings?

Because of the 100-ashore rule, a ship of 100 to 200 guests can put everyone on land at once or in two quick waves. A ship of 300 to 500 rotates groups, so each guest spends less time ashore. Smaller is not always better (bigger expedition ships ride the Drake more steadily and have more amenities), but it is the trade-off that matters most.

3. How much luxury, and how much is included?

Fares range from simple, comfortable polar ships to all-suite yachts with butlers. The bigger difference is often what is included: drinks, gratuities, pre-cruise hotel nights, the charter flight to Ushuaia, kayaking and camping. Two fares that look $3,000 apart can end up the same price. We compare them line by line for you.

4. Sail the Drake, or fly it?

Lindblad Expeditions, Quark Expeditions, Silversea and Atlas Ocean Voyages offer voyages that fly from Chile to King George Island. Everyone else sails. How to decide.

Frequently Asked

Choosing a Cruise Line

Which cruise line is best for Antarctica?
It depends what you value. For the deepest expedition experience and value, look at Quark, Lindblad, HX and Swan Hellenic. For luxury, Silversea, Seabourn, Scenic, Ponant, Viking and Atlas. If you are short on time, choose a line with fly-the-Drake voyages. Call us and we will narrow it to two or three sailings that fit you.
Does ship size matter in Antarctica?
More than anywhere else. Industry rules allow only 100 people ashore at one landing site at a time, and ships with more than 500 passengers may not land anyone. On a 100-guest ship everyone can be ashore together; on a 400-guest ship guests take turns, so each person gets less time on land.
Can I see Antarctica on a regular cruise ship?
Yes, but only from the deck. Large ships from Celebrity, Princess, Holland America, Oceania, Azamara and Regent include a few days of scenic cruising off the Peninsula on longer South America voyages. They cost less, but nobody goes ashore.
Are excursions included on Antarctica cruises?
Zodiac landings and cruises are included on every expedition line. Extras such as sea kayaking, overnight camping on the ice, helicopter flights and submarine dives are included on some lines and an added cost on others. Ask us for the specifics on the sailing you are considering.
Do Antarctica cruise lines provide parkas?
Most expedition lines give you a parka to keep and lend waterproof boots for landings, but policies vary by line. We will confirm it for your sailing.
