Located just four miles from the mainland at the edge of Chugach National Forest, the solitary Bering Expedition Landing Site is covered by dense rainforest. At its southern point, Cape St. Elias Lighthouse looks out over the Gulf of Alaska, a National Historic Landmark.

The largest totem pole in the world is located in Kake — at least according to the locals. Carved from a single tree, the 132-foot landmark overlooks a settlement of about 500 residents. Nestled in the Tongass National Forest and blessed with breathtaking scenery, the settlement is the historic home of the Kake tribe of Tinglits (“People of the Tides”). Villagers retain many of their Tlingit traditions and continue their subsistence-based lifestyle through hunting, fishing and lumbering.

Tucked in the Queen Charlotte Strait off British Columbia's west coast, in Canada, lies the tiny village of Alert Bay on Cormorant Island. Home to the Namgis First Nation, the town features an array of totem poles, including what may be the world's tallest. The U'mista, a local cultural center, is devoted to preserving masks and other important artifacts of the Kwakwa̱ka̱ʼwakw. Nearby Robson Bight Ecological Reserve is a protected area for the world's largest concentration of orca whales.
