First-Time Cruisers

Is Cruising Expensive?

Going on an Oceania cruise is one of the best ways to get a great vacation for a great value. Oceania’s cruise fares are per person and are based on double occupancy. Fares do not include shore excursions, baggage handling, gratuities, alcoholic beverages that are not part of the regular menu, laundry service or spa treatments. We are sometimes able to offer ship-board credit that can be applied to these expenses. Contact our travel agents to get the best pricing for upcoming Oceania cruises, and check out our affiliate partner for great deals on shore excursions.

Will I be bored?

There is so much to do on Oceania; you’ll be far from bored. There are lots of scheduled activities on board, like wine tastings of rare vintage wines, culinary center cooking classes and stimulating lectures. Each ship has a variety of bars, lounges and entertainment. Test your luck at the casino, or attend a live classical concert under the stars. From live music performances and karaoke to the Canyon Ranch Spa, there is something fun for everyone (and that is just what is on the ship)! You will also get the added adventure of exploring many exciting ports of call.

Will I get seasick?

Oceania encourages you to pack motion sickness medication if you think you may need it. Visit your doctor before you cruise and they will be able to inform you of effective preventative medications to combat unwanted symptoms. The ships have stabilizers and advanced weather information to ensure the smoothest travel possible, and you can ask our travel agents to book you in a room that is at the lowest and most centralized section of the vessel to reduce your chances of feeling discomfort. Larger ships tend to have a smoother ride, so Oceania’s Riviera or Marina would be good choices.

Is cruising safe?

Cruise ships are very safe. Congress passed the Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act in 2010, and if you have questions safety information is readily available to passengers. Cruise ships adhere to very strict security guidelines and practices. If you are concerned you may want to consider travel insurance. Travel insurance policies can cover a variety of situations depending on the policy you’re purchasing. To learn more, talk to your travel agent. Ships are equipped with security cameras and have sophisticated security departments to handle any issues that come up on board.

Can I get a special diet?

Special arrangements can be made aboard Oceania if you require diabetic, gluten-free, lactose-free, kosher, vegetarian or vegan meals. Other diets must be requested for approval and, in some cases, may require additional medical documentation.

What should I pack?

Oceania suggests “country club casual,” which means casual, comfortable clothes like khakis and collared shirts for men, and cotton tops, blouses and skirts and sundresses for women. Shorts are fine for excursions, and bathing suits and cover-ups for when you are around the pool. Jeans, shorts, T-shirts, and tennis shoes are discouraged after 6 pm in public rooms. As simple as it seems: make sure to bring your passport! Oceania collects your passport and holds it throughout the cruise to expedite customs procedures, but be sure you have it. Be sure to pack personal care essentials, but if you forget something Oceania Cruises’ ships stock many essentials in their boutiques.
