After 100+ ocean cruises first Danube cruise proves a charm

Keith Steiner started cruising with his family at the age of 12 on the now defunct Home Lines. Since then, and after retiring from MCI he and his wife Anne Marie have taken 120 voyages on Crystal. The first was 2002 on the Crystal Harmony to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary.
He figures they’ve spent almost four years at sea. Obviously the couple enjoys seafaring. Keith says they started taking yearly cruises back in the day when there was virtually no email or communications to be able to get away from it all.
It’s a Crystal clear favorite
He says they’ve mostly cruise on Crystal Serenity on which they’ve taken nine world cruises. But last year they got the itch to a river cruise. So of course they chose Crystal Mozart. And well, it wowed them.
Actually they boarded the Mozart after disembarking in Vienna from Crystal ‘Serenity, which they were on from Dec. to May. “It was our first river cruise and the ship blew us away,” he says.
“It was so special, amazing in fact. Very intimate. After a couple of hours on board we felt like we were at home. The crew was outstanding. We even knew our butler from Serenity. It’s a different experience. You’re in port a lot and we like that.”
The sociable duo like that it was easy to meet ship mates. “You got to know some of the guests very well because of the small size.” But even as little as it is, there was enough for us to do.”
“Crystal on steroids”
He can’t stop raving about the Mozart and calls it “Crystal on steroids.” They offer good lectures and entertainment
“There’s a nice size fitness center, wrap around deck and even bikes to ride.” Keith is fit and active. He raves about the food. “It was superb, always fresh and prepared to order.”
“The menu is small but there’s a good selection and you can order almost anything you want if it’s on board.”
Because the ship’s in port every day, chefs can shop for local produce. “It was fun to watch them load the food.”
The Steiner’s plan to take another river cruise, on Crystal of course. They are already booked on the first half of Crystal’s 2020 World Cruise Jan. 7 to Sydney. They plan to disembark there and spend time with their daughter who is living there temporarily .
While the Keith is perfectly content with the river cruise experience he says it’s not for people who are looking for a large pool, paddle tennis or big production shows. It’s all about the ports, never far from places.”
All those nautical miles transported the Steiners to nearly everywhere in the world. One of the few spots on their bucket list is still St. Petersburg.
Keith’s favorite destinations are Australia, New Zealand, Italy, Spain, France and Israel.
A fitness buff but non-sybarite, Keith rarely goes to the beach. “It’s got to be close to three years on Crystal Serenity and I’ve never been in the pool,” he admits.
