About the Port
Beppu sits on the island of Kyushu, where geothermal activity fuels one of Japan's most celebrated hot spring destinations. Steam vents rise across the hillsides, and neighborhoods built around centuries-old onsen culture spread toward the surrounding mountains and Beppu Bay. Visitors come for the variety found nowhere else in the country: mineral-rich thermal baths, bubbling mud pools, and sand baths where warm volcanic-heated sand is mounded over the body along the shore.
Beyond the baths, quiet streets wind past traditional bathhouses and small shops, with mountain views framing much of the town. The pier lies within reach of central Beppu, making it possible to sample the hot spring culture directly without extensive travel. Tour the Jigoku 'Hells'
Wander among Beppu's famous scenic hot springs—vividly colored pools like the cobalt Umi Jigoku and bubbling Chinoike Jigoku—too hot for bathing but mesmerizing to view. Several sit close together, making a self-guided loop easy in half a day.
Soak in a Traditional Onsen
Slip into a mineral-rich communal bath at one of the town's historic bathhouses, such as Takegawara Onsen, to experience centuries-old hot spring culture firsthand. Bring a small towel and modest patience for local bathing etiquette.
