Bordeaux (Le Verdon)

Gateway to Bordeaux's storied vineyards and gilded 18th-century streets along the Gironde estuary

All Cruise Ports

About the Port

Le Verdon-sur-Mer sits at the mouth of the Gironde estuary, serving as the deep-water port of call for travelers bound for Bordeaux, roughly ninety minutes inland by road. The surrounding Médoc peninsula is prime wine country, its low-lying vineyards and gravel soils producing some of France's most celebrated reds, with châteaux open for tastings along the route toward the city.

Bordeaux itself unfolds along the Garonne River, its honey-colored stone façades and grand squares earning the historic center UNESCO World Heritage status. Highlights include Place de la Bourse, mirrored by the shallow reflecting pool known as the Miroir d'Eau, and the Gothic Saint-André Cathedral. Because the port lies at some distance from the city, travelers typically arrange onward transport rather than exploring on foot from the pier.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Bordeaux .

Tour a Médoc Château

Stop at a Médoc estate en route to Bordeaux for a walk through the vines and a tasting of its celebrated reds; most visits require booking ahead since these are working châteaux, not drop-in venues.

See the Miroir d'Eau in Action

Time a visit to Place de la Bourse for when the reflecting pool's thin water sheet creates its mirror effect, alternating with a mist that cools the square—an essential photo stop in the city center.

Climb Saint-André Cathedral's Tower

Climb the adjoining Pey Berland tower for sweeping views over Bordeaux's stone rooftops and the Garonne, a short but rewarding detour from the Gothic cathedral below.
