Cochin

A centuries-old spice port where Arabian trade winds carried Chinese, Dutch, and Portuguese influence to India's Malabar Coast

All Cruise Ports

About the Port

Cochin, known locally as Kochi, sits on India's southwestern Malabar Coast, a natural harbor that has drawn traders since antiquity for its access to pepper, cardamom, and other spices. Layers of colonial history remain visible in Fort Kochi, where Portuguese and Dutch architecture stands alongside one of India's oldest synagogues and the cantilevered Chinese fishing nets that still work the harbor at dusk. Mattancherry Palace, with its detailed murals, offers a glimpse into the region's royal past.

The historic Fort Kochi quarter is compact and walkable, making it easy to move between waterfront, market lanes, and colonial-era churches on foot. Beyond the old town, Kerala's backwaters and lush countryside extend inland, offering a quieter counterpoint to the port's mercantile bustle. The blend of maritime history, spice-trade heritage, and everyday harbor life gives the port a layered, unhurried character distinct from India's larger cities.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Cochin.

Cruise the Kerala Backwaters

A short drive inland leads to palm-fringed canals where traditional houseboats glide past rice paddies and village life. Even a half-day excursion offers a serene contrast to the harbor's maritime bustle.

Visit St. Francis Church

Reputed to be India's oldest European-built church, this Fort Kochi landmark once held the grave of Vasco da Gama. It's a short walk from the waterfront and takes only a few minutes to see.

Browse Jew Town's Spice Lanes

Wander the narrow streets near the Paradesi Synagogue, lined with antique shops and sacks of cardamom, pepper, and cloves that recall centuries of spice trade. Time permitting, catch an evening Kathakali dance performance for a taste of local theater.
