About the Port
Devils Island lies just offshore from mainland French Guiana, part of a trio of islands once used by France as a penal colony from the late nineteenth century into the mid-twentieth. Overgrown stone ruins, rusted machinery, and remnants of cellblocks remain scattered beneath the palms, giving the island an atmosphere equal parts tropical and somber. The isolation that once made it nearly escape-proof today lends it a quiet, contemplative appeal for visitors tracing this chapter of colonial and penal history.
Access is by tender, as there is no deep-water pier, and landings can be affected by sea conditions. Paths wind through the ruins at an easy pace, with dense vegetation, seabirds, and coastal views along the way. Comfortable footwear and sun protection are worthwhile, given the exposed, humid setting.
