Dusky Sound is a port of call on New Zealand fjords ocean sailings, concentrated in the summer and shoulder months, with Norwegian Cruise Line, Celebrity, and Royal Caribbean calling most often.
Dusky Sound lies deep within Fiordland, on New Zealand's remote southwest coast, where glacier-carved cliffs plunge into still, dark water and temperate rainforest clings to nearly vertical rock faces. One of the longest and most complex fiords in the region, it was surveyed by Captain James Cook in the 1770s and later hosted early, short-lived European settlement attempts, making it a site of genuine historical interest as well as scenery. Waterfalls thread down through dense native bush, and the surrounding waters and islands shelter fur seals, dolphins, and native birdlife, including the Fiordland crested penguin.
There is no town or pier here; ships move slowly through the sound, and the landscape is best appreciated from open decks as the vessel threads between forested slopes and quiet coves. Part of the vast Fiordland National Park and the Te Wahipounamu World Heritage area, Dusky Sound offers a rare, largely untouched glimpse of New Zealand's wild southern coastline.
