Fakarava

A UNESCO-listed atoll in the Tuamotu Islands where turquoise lagoon waters teem with coral gardens and reef sharks

All Cruise Ports

About the Port

Fakarava is a slender coral atoll in French Polynesia's Tuamotu Archipelago, encircling a vast lagoon recognized by UNESCO as a Biosphere Reserve for its exceptional marine diversity. Two natural passes cut through the reef, drawing currents rich with grey reef sharks, cauliflower coral formations, and dense schools of tropical fish that make the surrounding waters a magnet for divers and snorkelers. The main village of Rotoava offers a low-key introduction to atoll life, with simple churches, pearl farms, and coconut groves shaded by palm trees.

Beyond the water, the atoll's flat coral terrain invites easy exploration by bicycle or on foot, with white-sand shorelines and calm shallows well suited to swimming. Vessels typically anchor offshore, with tenders bringing visitors to small piers near the village. Fakarava's remote setting and protected status have kept development minimal, preserving a rare glimpse of a working Polynesian atoll community set against some of the clearest lagoon waters in the South Pacific.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Fakarava.

Dive or Snorkel the South Pass

Drift among schooling grey reef sharks and vivid cauliflower coral in one of the world's most celebrated dive passes; short boat transfer from the pier, best arranged in advance for slack-tide timing.

Pedal Through Rotoava Village

Rent a bicycle near the tender pier and roll past coral churches, pearl farms, and coconut groves on the atoll's flat, easy roads—an unhurried way to see daily Polynesian atoll life.

Swim the Lagoon Shallows

Wade into calm, glass-clear shallows along the white-sand shoreline for an easy, current-free swim, a gentle complement to the more adventurous pass dives.
