Gythion

A pastel-hued Peloponnese harbor town that once served ancient Sparta as its port, and now opens the way to Mystras

All Cruise Ports

About the Port

Gythion sits on the southern coast of the Peloponnese, its waterfront lined with neoclassical buildings and pastel houses climbing whitewashed lanes above the harbor. Once the naval port of ancient Sparta, the town today moves at an easier pace, with cafés and tavernas serving fresh seafood along the quay and small shops tucked into narrow streets. The harbor itself, framed by the islet of Marathonisi, remains the town's focal point and a pleasant place to linger.

The old town is compact enough to explore on foot directly from the pier, making it easy to combine a stroll with a coffee stop. Gythion also serves as a practical gateway inland to Sparta and the Byzantine hilltop town of Mystras, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its Byzantine churches and fortress ruins. Together, the port and its surrounding region offer a layered look at Greek history from antiquity through the medieval era.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Gythion.

Explore Mystras Fortress Town

Wander the Byzantine churches, monasteries, and hilltop fortress ruins of this UNESCO site, reached on an inland excursion of roughly an hour each way from the pier; book ahead since it draws steady interest.

Walk to Marathonisi Islet

Cross the short causeway from the harbor to this small pine-covered islet, home to a restored tower and quiet views back over Gythion's waterfront—an easy, no-cost stroll right from the pier.

Wander the Old Town Lanes

Climb the whitewashed staircases above the harbor past pastel houses and neoclassical facades, pausing at a café or ouzo bar for a slower, on-foot look at everyday Gythion.
