About The Port Of Hubbard Glacier
Hubbard Glacier stretches more than seventy-five miles from its source in the Yukon interior to its face in Disenchantment Bay, making it the longest tidewater glacier in North America. Named for Gardiner Greene Hubbard, a lawyer and early advocate for geographic exploration, the glacier is unusual among its Alaskan counterparts for advancing rather than retreating, slowly grinding forward into the bay year after year. Its blue-white face rises hundreds of feet above the water and calves with a low, rolling thunder that carries across the water.
Ships approach the glacier's terminus closely, allowing passengers to take in the spectacle from open decks rather than through a shore excursion. Broken ice fragments drift near the face, often hosting harbor seals that use the floes as resting spots. Surrounding peaks and hanging glaciers complete a rugged, remote setting reachable only by water.
