About the Port
Hvalsey lies in a quiet fjord in southern Greenland, near the town of Qaqortoq, and shelters the most substantial Norse ruins found anywhere on the island. Stone walls of a communal hall and a well-preserved church still stand amid open grassland, marking what was once a thriving Norse farmstead centuries ago. The setting is remote and largely unchanged, framed by mountains and the cold waters of the fjord.
Visitors reach the site by boat or small vessel, as no roads connect it to larger settlements, making the approach part of the experience. Walking among the ruins offers a tangible sense of the Norse presence in Greenland before the settlements were abandoned.
