About the Port
Rising from the sea south of the Korean peninsula, Jeju is built from volcanic stone, its landscape shaped by Hallasan, a dormant volcano and the country's highest peak, and by dramatic tuff cones like Seongsan Ilchulbong along the coast. Lava tube caves and distinctive black basalt formations have earned parts of the island UNESCO World Heritage recognition, while the mild climate supports citrus groves and dense subtropical greenery unusual for the region.
The island's culture stands apart from the mainland, most visibly in the haenyeo, generations of women free-divers who still gather shellfish by hand, a tradition recognized by UNESCO as intangible heritage. Stone grandfather statues and thatched-roof village architecture reflect a history shaped by isolation and self-reliance. Ships typically call at the port on Jeju's northern coast, placing the island's markets and coastal scenery within easy reach for a day ashore.
Pavlus Recommendations
How our planners would spend a day in Jeju.
Climb Seongsan Ilchulbong
A steep 30-40 minute trail leads to the rim of this tuff cone crater rising straight from the sea, with sweeping coastal views at sunrise or any time of day. Wear good shoes; it's a UNESCO-listed must for the island's east side.
Watch the Haenyeo Divers
Catch a live performance or demonstration near Seongsan of the island's elder free-divers surfacing with shellfish, a centuries-old tradition now recognized as intangible cultural heritage. Scheduled shows run at set times, so check ahead for the day's schedule.
Explore Manjanggul Lava Tube
Wander roughly a kilometer of this cavernous lava tube cave, one of the longest in the world, where walkways reveal cooled lava formations and towering stone columns. A short taxi or bus ride from the port area, with cool underground temperatures year-round.
