La Palma, Spain

A steep volcanic island in the Canaries where dark cliffs, ancient laurel forests, and star-clear skies reward the unhurried traveler.

About the Port

La Palma rises sharply from the Atlantic, its volcanic peaks and deep ravines earning it a reputation as one of the greenest and most dramatic islands in the Canaries. The capital, Santa Cruz de La Palma, greets arriving ships with a compact old town of wooden balconies, cobbled lanes, and a harbor-front plaza that invites an easy stroll. Banana plantations terrace the lower slopes, while laurel forests and volcanic craters define the interior.

Inland, the Caldera de Taburiente forms a vast natural amphitheater of cliffs and pine forest, and the island's high elevation and clear atmosphere have made its northern ridge home to one of the world's notable astronomical observatories. The pier sits within walking distance of the historic quarter, making the capital's churches, museums, and cafés readily accessible on foot. Beyond town, winding roads lead to viewpoints and villages where the island's quieter, unspoiled character comes into full view.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in La Palma.

Hike the Caldera de Taburiente

This vast volcanic crater offers cliffside trails through pine forest and views of plunging ravines; a taxi or organized excursion inland is needed since it's roughly 40 minutes from the pier.

Wander Santa Cruz's Old Quarter

Stroll cobbled lanes lined with carved wooden balconies, the Plaza de España, and Renaissance-era churches, all within a few minutes' walk of the ship.

Drive to a Mountain Viewpoint

Head to a lookout like Mirador de la Concepción or toward the northern ridge for sweeping views over terraced banana plantations and the island's rugged coastline; best reached by rental car or taxi for a half-day outing.
