About the Port

La Romana sits on the southeastern coast of the Dominican Republic, its harbor once built around the sugar trade and now serving as an entry point to some of the country's most storied attractions. Just inland, the hilltop village of Altos de Chavón recreates a sixteenth-century European settlement, complete with cobblestone lanes, an amphitheater, and workshops built in the 1970s above the Chavón River. The surrounding region is known for championship golf courses and the resort community of Casa de Campo.

Beyond the port, travelers reach the beaches of Bayahibe and can arrange boat trips to Saona Island, part of a protected national park known for calm waters and coconut groves. Taxis and organized transfers cover the short distance from the pier into town and toward these sites, making the port a practical starting point for a full day exploring the coast.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in La Romana.

Explore Altos de Chavón

Wander the cobblestone lanes and coral-stone buildings of this hilltop artisan village, then peek into the amphitheater overlooking the Chavón River. A short taxi ride from the pier, roughly 20 minutes, makes it an easy half-day visit.

Boat Trip to Saona Island

Cruise through mangrove channels to reach powder-white sand and shallow turquoise water inside a protected national park. Book ahead, since the excursion takes most of the day including transfer time to Bayahibe.

Relax on Bayahibe Beach

Spend a few unhurried hours on this palm-lined stretch of coast, a favorite launch point for divers and snorkelers exploring nearby reefs. Reach it by short transfer from the port, ideal for travelers wanting sand time without a boat excursion.
